“Your child has autism.”
They are words that a new family will hear every 20 minutes. We heard these words four years ago when Graham was diagnosed with autism at two and a half. Now, Graham is in 1st grade where he is in a regular classroom with 17 kids. He receives speech and occupational therapy every week and has daily interaction with his special school district teacher who is wonderful at helping him find coping strategies if he gets upset as well as helping him maintain appropriate social interactions. It seems fitting that he is in 1st grade as he has had a number of firsts this year. In the last six months, Graham lost his first tooth (a big milestone for a 6 year old!), traveled internationally, snorkeled with stingrays, played on his school t-ball team, played tennis and golf, learned how to dive and can swim all four strokes (though not expertly!) and tried tubing for the first time – and loved it! The confidence that Graham has gained in the last year is truly remarkable and has turned him into this child who is just game for anything. He is a happy, sweet kid who, despite his ongoing struggles, is doing an amazing job of fitting in. Most importantly, Graham loves his brother and cousins and is happiest when surrounded by family and friends.
We are so proud of Graham and are filled with hope every day that we are getting closer to finding a cause and a cure for autism. By participating in this event, our hope is that we will soon hear “Your child no longer has autism.” Please join us on Saturday, October 10th in Forest Park for the 2009 Walk Now for Autism. Together we can make a difference!
