Years ago, when my daughter with an autism spectrum disorder needed legal representation, my husband and I had a difficult time finding the right attorney to represent her interests. Back then, there existed only a small handful of attorneys who practiced special education law. Unable to locate an attorney who could represent my daughter’s interests with the requisite compassion and expertise I felt we needed, I was driven to redirect my legal career to pursue special education law.
As years passed and the frequency of autism grew to 1 in 150, so has the number of children in need of legal representation. I am struck by how many more attorneys there are now than there were eight years ago, working tirelessly to help parents of children with disabilities obtain a free and appropriate public education for their disabled children. Like myself, the vast majority of these attorneys are parents or others closely impacted by a loved-one with Autism or another disability.
As organizations like Autism Speaks help us to learn more about Autism, my wish is to someday return to the time when fewer children require legal representation and fewer attorneys are drawn-in, by necessity, to the field of special education law. Your donation to the Hudson Valley Autism Speaks Walk can help us take another step closer towards achieving this goal.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank so many of you who have supported my family in the past. Be it your past financial contributions to Autism Speaks and/or your more direct work with my daughter, my husband and I are so grateful to you. Today, our daughter is about to enter the fifth grade. She is in a co-teach classroom in our local, elementary school, being educated with her typically developing peers. This summer, we were thrilled to observe her perform in two separate plays with her theatre camp. This past year in school, she had the ingenuity to “Google” me and then questioned why I was talking about her on my web-site! These may not sound like milestones to a parent of a typical child, but rest assured that to a parent of a child on the Spectrum, these are huge accomplishments!
While we continue to work hard to support our daughter’s ongoing social and academic needs, we are proud of how far she has come, how much she has achieved, and what a strong young lady she has become. We hope we can continue to count on your support of our efforts to continue to walk forward and educate and empower others about how to understand and support people with Autism.
