When Harry Met Tyler
Last October, my son Peter and his wife Liz had an opportunity to take my grandson Tyler to the Autism Speaks Chefs Gala at Cipriani on Wall Street. It was an extravagant affair that would have been over-stimulating for anyone let alone a 16 year old with autism. However, Tyler rose to the occasion and handled the events of the evening exceptionally well. He's always been a fan of Harry Connick, Jr. so you can imagine how it felt to meet his hero in person. According to Peter and Liz, Harry couldn't have been more gracious and kind to Tyler when they met. He even commented that he thought Tyler looked exactly like he did when he was a teen.
Eventually, Harry performed his set. By the final song, Tyler was getting antsy so he was allowed to get up and dance in the aisle a bit. Suzanne Wright, co-Founder of Autism Speaks, spotted Tyler and offered him to take the stage with Harry. That's all it took. Harry and Tyler jammed on stage like there was no tomorrow. There wasn't a dry eye in the house that night. It was truly a "Harry Connick moment" for Tyler and his parents.
At a time like this in the midst of a financial crisis and recession, it would be easy for me to say "How can I possibly ask my friends to join me this year again for Walk Now for Autism?" Well, the simple truth is, my grandson Tyler still has autism and I will never give up hope in celebrating him for who he is and what life can hopefully become once a cure for autism is found. That's why I walk each year for Tyler. Won't you join me?
From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for supporting this journey with Tyler and all the others affected by joining me in Walk Now for Autism Speaks Chicago.
Warmly,
Jane Bell Scott
