When we were expecting our first child, my wife asked God for a beautiful baby, and He gave us one. He also showed us that there are much more important things than being beautiful. Our sweet Matthew struggles with an Autism Spectrum Disorder that impedes his ability to interact with children, make friends, even to sit in a classroom and learn. It has led to incredible frustration not just for him, but also for those who love him. I could go on and on about the experiences I have had and the frustrations I have felt over the last eight years, but that is not the point of walking for autism. The point is to improve the lives of those affected with autism spectrum disorders and the lives of those around them.

I am walking for autism, because I support research that helps us to understand this disorder better and can identify the best therapeutic techniques to help these individuals assimilate into society. I am walking for autism, because I believe it is necessary to increase awareness of this disorder to educators and healthcare providers of young children, so that affected individuals can be identified as soon and possible and their behaviors dealt with appropriately for maximum benefit. I am walking for autism, because I want the next parent whose child is diagnosed with autism to have access to the best information and resources available.
