Jakob, Kyra, and Nikolas
“Your child has autism.”
For the past six years, these four simple words have defined, in subtle and not-so-subtle ways, every aspect of our family’s life. Yet, in virtue of their simplicity, they probably convey far too little: both the tremendous toll that autism has taken on us and, just as important, the many invaluable lessons we have learned from Nik, his teachers, and his therapists over the years.
And, though we will always be grateful for these lessons, we are determined to erase those four words from our family’s lexicon – and from those of all families who must endure this disorder. Indeed, it remains an unfortunate fact that, every 20 minutes, a new family will hear the words we heard on September 5, 2003: “Your child has autism.”
By participating in this event, our hope is that we – and others in our situation – will soon hear, “Your child no longer has autism.”
Thank you for supporting our efforts to raise both awareness of autism and funding for the research that, we trust, will one day prevent and treat this mystifying disorder.
