“Your child has autism.”
These four simple words define the facts. They are useful in explaining the past but they do not predict the future. They do not convey the devastating toll that autism has had on our family nor limit our determination to overcome this disorder. They are words that a new family will hear every 20 minutes.
My daughter, Cordelia, has PDD-NOS, which is one diagnosis of several on the autism spectrum. She has directly benefited from the research into autism treatment that has been done thus far, and she will benefit from any future research. My hope is that one day PDD-NOS will be nothing but a label once applied to her, and it will have no effect on her life. I want her to grow up and be successful, be happy, have friends, and enjoy her life.
