“Your daughter has autism.”
These four simple words said to myself and my husband just over six years ago confirmed our worst fears about our daughter, Larissa. She was 2 1/2 at the time. Her whole life ahead of her, but our dreams for her were shattered. Larissa is 8 1/2 now and has come a long way through countless hours of various therapies and behavioral interventions. She has achieved much, but as she gets older, the gap between her and her "chronological" peers grows.
The toll that autism has had on our family does not limit our determinedness to overcome this disorder. A new family will hear the same diagnosis every 20 minutes.
By participating in this event, our hope is that we will soon hear “Your child no longer has autism.”
By raising funds for Autism Speaks, we hope for many things: new treatments, a possible cure, and an end to the growing epidemic.
