Join me in my efforts to support Walk Now for Autism Speaks
Shannon and Jimmy welcome you again to support the Nantucket Walk 2009. Last year's walk was a banner year and we hope to make this summer's walk even better. Autism continues to grow at an alarming rate and there still is no cure. Below are some hard facts about autism and why we need your help.
* Every minute a family is told their child has been diagnosed with autism.
* More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes & cancer combined.
* 1 in 150 children (1 in 94 boys) is national average diagnosed with autism.
* Most children are never officially diagnosed so the numbers are even greater.
* In the NY/metropolitan area some believe the numbers are as high as 1 in 30 boys.
* There still is no cure and most insurance does not cover autism therapy.
* Good therapy is hard to find and most schools are not fully equipped to help children on the autism spectrum.
Autism Speaks' goal is to change the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders. They are dedicated to funding research, raising public awareness and bringing hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder.
We thank you for considering Autism Speaks and hope you can contribute in some way.
